 Paddy Torsney served Burlington
as an outstanding Member of Parliament for 12 years. She
helped thousands of constituents solve problems and change
policies. She successfully brought Burlington's issues to
Ottawa. She worked to bring jobs, promote opportunities for
youth, honour Canada's War Veterans, and championed the
National Do Not Call Registry and the International Campaign
to Ban Landmines. Since 2006, Paddy worked with the Leader of
the Official Opposition and consulted on provincial
issues.
Paddy knows Burlington and she knows Ottawa, having played
several key roles in projects nationally and internationally
as Burlington's MP. These include:
- Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International
Cooperation
- Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the
Environment, where she played a vital role in passing the
new Canadian Environment Protection Act
- Chair of the Special Committee on the non-medical use of
drugs
- Vice Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human
Rights, Public Safety, and Emergency Preparedness
- Member of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science,
and Technology
- Chair of the Liberal Women's Caucus (1994-1996)
In 1997, Paddy was a delegate to the Ottawa Conference to
Ban Land Mines. She was elected President of the Canadian
Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and as Director of the
Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group.
Paddy serves on the board of Halton's children's mental
health facility, ROCK: Reach Out Centre for Kids. She is
co-host of Roundtable on Cogeco TV and a member of the United
Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton Leadership Committee
2006-2008.
After attending Holy Rosary grade school in Burlington,
Paddy cut her political teeth at Cathedral Girls high school,
where she was Vice President of the students council. After
working for a year, she enrolled at McGill University and
graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in International
Business and Marketing. |
